01 The novel

Deadweight PrincipleAn Ad Nullum novel

An impossible mass.
A very human problem.

In 2231, a Pallene Resources drilling rig strikes an unmarked four-metre metallic hull. Its confirmed mass: 3.2 billion tonnes.

To Elias Conaire, Pallene’s young Chief Operating Officer, it is an existential liability with thirty days before mandatory disclosure. To theoretical physicist Ada Voss, it is physical proof of what her colleagues thought impossible. To Martian investigator Athena Hsieh, it is a cover-up buried inside immaculate corporate manifests.

The asteroid begins reporting phantom mining yields. Frontier fuel depots run dry. To keep the discovery cloaked, Elias begins altering the logistics of Sol.

Every system has a breaking point.

About these registry estimates

The Compact records commerce through registries, not national accounts. Outer-system output reflects monopoly infrastructure, hazardous labour, fuel, refining and logistics; it does not imply widespread personal wealth.

The developed heart of human civilisation is a patchwork of corporate demaines, dynastic estates and chartered cities, held together by Compact registries. Largely self-sufficient, Earth still depends on orbital materials for its high-tech industries.

The Kairos-controlled Indonesian Needle is the essential route to orbit for Earth’s bulk goods: soils, food and other organics, alongside the people leaving for the outer planets.

Higher-value exports also reach orbit through Earth’s other launch sites. Its industrial strength rests on a developed, largely self-sufficient economy, even as advanced production draws specialised materials down from space.

04 About the author

Christian J. V. Renard

Institutions are complicated.
Space does not improve them.

Background
Quantitative finance

Status
Recovering banker

Renard has a background in quantitative finance, financial law, banking, and regulation. Years spent inside large institutions left him with a particular fascination for what happens when rules, incentives, capital, and human judgment collide—and what happens when systems are pushed beyond the conditions they were designed for.

He created Ad Nullum from that institutional starting point, but the universe does not stay there. The series expands from corporations, contracts, and political power into dynasties, religion, civilization, consciousness, and the deeper questions beneath them: what makes institutions endure, what makes people individual despite their circumstances, and how human ways of organizing evolve or metastasize as the scale of the problem keeps growing.

Physics cannot be negotiated with. Debt still has to be repaid. Contracts still matter. So do memory, faith, identity, and the stories people build around power.

In the universe of Ad Nullum, the audit is always coming. Success at scale merely changes the shape of the auditor.

Renard writes about people trying to finance the future, regulate it, inherit it, sanctify it, understand it—and survive what they make of it.
